Irish Player Mocks Israel With Black Armband After Scoring
The Israeli national football team suffered a humiliating defeat against Ireland, losing 3-0 in a Nations League match played in Debrecen, Hungary. Ireland's Jack Moylan scored the third goal in the 25th minute. Moylan, who had supported a boycott of the match by teammate Gavin Bazunu, celebrated his goal by kissing a black armband he wore "in memory of the victims in Gaza." He then waved the armband at the Israeli fans before kissing it.
Despite earlier threats of a boycott, the Irish team did appear for the match. However, the Israeli players failed to perform, allowing Ireland to score easily. The match saw a tense atmosphere, with the few hundred Israeli fans present booing the Irish players during warm-ups, while the Irish team showed disrespect during the Israeli national anthem, bowing their heads and turning their backs. The Irish players also refused to shake hands with the Israeli team.
Ireland had initially been scheduled to host the return match in Serbia, which will be played without a crowd. The Israeli team is currently coached by Ran Ben Shimon.
