Irish Player Gestures After Scoring Against Israel
The Israeli national team suffered an early defeat against Ireland on Sunday, with the match becoming tense. In the 24th minute, Ireland's Jack Byrne scored, putting his team up 3-0 against Ran Ben Shimon's squad.
Immediately after scoring, Byrne raised the black armband worn by the Irish players and then kissed the team's crest on his jersey. According to David Corcoran, CEO of the Football Association of Ireland, the team wore the armbands "in memory of the victims of the conflict."
Byrne, who plays for Cardiff, was one of three players who supported Gavin Bazunu's decision to boycott the match.
