Irish Player Provokes Israel with Black Armband Gesture
During a highly charged soccer match on Sunday, Irish player Jack Byrne scored an early goal against the Israeli national team, putting Ireland up 3-0 by the 24th minute. Following his goal, Byrne provocatively waved a black armband, which the Irish team wore "in memory of the victims of the conflict," according to FAI CEO David Coral. Byrne, who plays for Cardiff, was one of three players who supported teammate Gavin Bazunu's decision to boycott the game. The Israeli team ultimately lost the match, which was coached by Ran Ben Shimon.
