Arab Israeli Politician Disqualified from Knesset Over Hamas Attack Remarks

Sami Abu Shehadeh, an Arab Israeli politician, was disqualified from running for the Knesset (Israeli parliament) by the Central Elections Committee due to problematic statements, including an article he wrote the day after the October 7th Hamas-led attacks. In the article, Abu Shehadeh referred to the massacre as a "historic event" and mentioned Hamas's "surprise" for security forces, suggesting that if "little Gaza" could achieve such an outcome, other nations could do more. He later claimed he did not yet grasp the scale of the events.

In a separate development, Kan 11 revealed that three days after the massacre, Abu Shehadeh posted a TikTok video that did not condemn the attack or name Hamas as responsible. In the video, he reiterated his earlier sentiments, calling the events a "significant strategic political event" with regional implications. While expressing condolences to the families of victims, he focused on "our people in the Negev" and accused Israeli leadership of "racist, barbaric, and inhuman incitement" against Palestinians, citing terms like "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" in relation to Israel's actions in Gaza.

He also claimed Palestinians faced threats within Israel, particularly from "historical Palestinian cities and mixed cities." Judge Solberg dismissed Abu Shehadeh's explanations as unacceptable and unusually participated in the vote to disqualify him. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the disqualification.
