Thousands of Illegally Smuggled Eggs Seized Near Jerusalem

Israeli agricultural inspectors on Thursday intercepted a large shipment of approximately 76,800 eggs being smuggled from the Palestinian Authority into Jerusalem via the Tunnels checkpoint. The eggs, transported in an Israeli truck, were found to bear suspected counterfeit stamps, including names of Israeli distributors and sorting stations.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, this seizure represents one of the largest egg smuggling operations foiled in recent years. The eggs were packed on eight pallets, totaling 2,560 cartons, and were brought into Israel without the required import permits.

Authorities suspect the eggs were intended for sale in Israel, falsely presented as having undergone legal sorting and inspection. The truck has been confiscated, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspect, who will be summoned for questioning.

Due to public health risks, the seized eggs were destroyed. The Ministry emphasized that importing eggs from the Palestinian Authority without a permit and oversight is illegal, as their origin, production, storage, and transport conditions cannot be verified. The lack of veterinary and quality control poses a significant risk to public health.

Moshe Aharak, director of the Enforcement and Investigations Unit, stated that the goal of such smuggling is to deceive consumers into believing the product has passed all necessary checks. He added that the unit is increasing its activities during the holiday season, when demand rises, to prevent unregulated food from reaching the public.
