Massive Dairy and Food Smuggling Operation Foiled in Jerusalem

Israeli authorities seized approximately 55 tons of dairy products and sensitive foods in a large-scale operation at a warehouse in the Atarot industrial zone in Jerusalem. The raid, conducted by inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the National Food Service of the Ministry of Health, and the Israel Police, was prompted by intelligence indicating increased smuggling attempts ahead of the High Holy Days.

Upon arrival, officers encountered resistance from a suspect who refused to open the gates, necessitating a forced entry. Inside, they discovered a distribution network ready for operation, with three refrigerated trucks loaded with cheeses, yogurts, desserts, salads, and hummus. All these products originated from unregulated sources in the Palestinian Authority.

Due to significant public health risks and the absence of proper sanitation and transportation conditions, the Ministry of Agriculture ordered the immediate destruction of all seized goods. The suspects were detained for questioning, and findings were passed to tax authorities to investigate potential serious financial offenses.

The Ministry of Agriculture reiterated its warning to consumers, urging them to purchase animal-derived products only from licensed retailers and to ensure products are properly labeled in Hebrew. Moshe Aharak, head of the Central Unit for Enforcement and Investigations at the Ministry, stated, "This is an unusual seizure of tens of tons of food products that were moments away from being distributed to the public in Israel." He emphasized the inability to guarantee the safety of unregulated products, citing unknown origins, animal health status, and improper storage and transport conditions. He urged the public to buy only from authorized businesses with intact packaging and clear Hebrew labeling, vowing continued action against those endangering public health.
