Tens of Thousands of Counterfeit Eggs Seized En Route to Jerusalem

Israeli agricultural inspectors intercepted a shipment of nearly 77,000 eggs attempting to enter Israel from the Palestinian Authority without the required import permits. The eggs, found on a truck stopped at the Tunnels Checkpoint near Jerusalem, were stamped with markings from Israeli distributors and sorting stations, which authorities suspect were forged.

The operation occurred during the holiday season, a period of heightened enforcement. Inspectors discovered eight pallets containing approximately 76,800 eggs, intended for sale in Israel as if they had undergone legal inspection and sorting. Importing eggs from the Palestinian Authority without permits is prohibited due to concerns about verifying their origin, production conditions, storage, and transport.

All the seized eggs were destroyed due to public health risks. The truck was confiscated, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspect, who is expected to be summoned for questioning. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security emphasized that such enforcement actions are crucial to prevent the sale of unregulated food to the public.

Moshe Aharak, director of the central enforcement and investigation unit at the ministry, stated that the intention behind using fake stamps was to deceive consumers into believing the product had passed all necessary checks. He added that the shipment was stopped before reaching store shelves and that enforcement activities are intensified during the holidays.
