Police Arrest Golan Heights Driver in Fatal Bicycle Crash
Israeli police have arrested a 20-year-old resident of the Golan Heights on suspicion of causing the death of cyclist Tal Glabov by driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Highway 98 near the Hispin Junction on Saturday morning. Glabov, 48, was struck by the vehicle while riding his bicycle and died at the scene after prolonged resuscitation efforts.
According to police, an initial investigation at the scene raised suspicions that the driver had consumed alcohol. A subsequent test confirmed a positive indication of alcohol in his system. The driver's detention was extended by the Magistrate Court in Nazareth.
Glabov was a well-known figure in Israel's triathlon, endurance, and cycling communities, having participated multiple times in the Israelman half-distance competition in Eilat and Ironman events worldwide. He was preparing for his first full Israelman race.
His coach, Dan Alterman, described a recent meeting with Glabov to finalize training plans, which he now views as a farewell encounter. Glabov is survived by his wife, Galit, and children, Yuval and Maya.
This fatality marks the second consecutive weekend that a cyclist has been killed on an inter-city road in Israel. Just last week, 56-year-old Itzik Barashi, a cameraman for Kan 11 News, died after being hit by a vehicle on Highway 44. So far this year, over 335 people have died in road accidents across Israel.
