Soldier Arrested After Fatal Hit-and-Run on Cyclist, Allegedly While Drunk

A 20-year-old soldier from the Golan Heights region had his detention extended by three days by the Magistrate's Court in Nazareth (formerly Nov HaGalil) on Saturday. He is suspected of fatally striking Tal Gilboa, 47, while Gilboa was cycling on Route 98 near the Magshimim Junction. Police stated that the soldier was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, with a positive indication found in a test administered to him.

The soldier's attorney argued that his client is a "normal soldier" with no prior criminal or traffic offenses. He claimed the alcohol consumed was long before the incident and did not affect his driving, asserting the accident was unavoidable. The defense stated the cyclist suddenly swerved into the soldier's lane, leaving him no chance to avoid the collision. The attorney also highlighted that his client remained at the scene, attempted resuscitation, and called for emergency services, demonstrating good citizenship.

Tal Gilboa, a resident of Kibbutz Kfar Haruv in the southern Golan Heights, was a triathlete who had previously competed in the "Ironman" race. He worked as a development manager at a software company. Friends and colleagues remembered him as a dedicated athlete with immense determination, who often set and achieved challenging goals, even overcoming physical injuries.

Dan Altermann, a prominent Israeli triathlete and Gilboa's coach, expressed his grief in a heartfelt social media post. He described Gilboa as a good friend and a "salt of the earth" individual, known for his quiet humility and drive. Altermann recalled their recent meeting to plan future goals, never imagining it would be their last.
