Israel Braces for Autumn Chill and Potential Heavy Rains

Following a warm start to the week, Israel is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures and the possibility of the first autumn rains, particularly in the north. While summer conditions have lingered, signs of its end are emerging. The weather shift begins Tuesday, with a notable decrease in temperatures across the center and south, falling below seasonal averages. Skies will be partly cloudy to cloudy, with drizzle and light rain possible along the coast and in northern areas. This cooling trend is expected to continue into Wednesday, with further temperature drops and potential localized light showers in the north.

Temperatures on Sunday are forecast to be clear or partly cloudy with no significant changes, remaining within seasonal norms. Monday will see similar conditions, with a slight temperature increase, mainly in the center and south, still within normal ranges. Localized, weak showers are possible in the north on Monday.

Looking ahead, global meteorological models from the US, Europe, and Canada predict a turbulent 2026-2027 winter with unusually high precipitation. The El Niño phenomenon is expected to alter air currents, significantly intensifying storm activity in the Middle East, leading to above-average rainfall in October, November, and December.

In preparation, the Israel Meteorological Service has released a list of 25 storm names for the upcoming season, including eight Israeli-designated names. The first Israeli name on the list is 'Bar,' designated as the second storm system of the season, potentially arriving before the end of 2026. Other Israeli names include 'Eitan' (system #5) and 'Hadar' (system #8).
