Iran Linked to Terror Attacks on Jewish Targets in Europe

Belgian authorities have directly stated for the first time that the Iranian regime is linked to a series of attacks targeting Jewish and Israeli sites within the country. Gert Vercauteren, head of Belgium's Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (CUTA), reported that perpetrators of two recent attacks in Belgium "with certainty" acted on calls from Iran to attack Jewish targets globally. These incidents include a homemade explosive device detonated near a synagogue in Liege on March 9, and a car fire in the Jewish quarter of Antwerp approximately two weeks later. Neither attack resulted in casualties.

European intelligence agencies have been investigating a little-known group called "Harakaat Asbab al-Yamin al-Islamiya," which claimed responsibility on social media for attacks on Jewish and American targets across Europe. New intelligence gathered by Belgian services has strengthened the suspicion that this group may be an operational tool of Tehran, though some information remains classified. Other European countries are pursuing similar lines of inquiry.

In the Netherlands, four individuals were recently arrested on suspicion of planning an attack on a synagogue in Hemstede. Investigators found incendiary materials and powerful pyrotechnics during searches. Dutch authorities consider the incident a clear terrorist act but have not yet directly implicated Iran.

Belgium's terror threat level remains at 'serious,' the third of four levels. CUTA attributes the continued heightened security measures primarily to escalating tensions with Iran and increased threats stemming from the Middle East situation. This development follows a warning from former U.S. President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly, cautioning European nations against excessive rapprochement with Iran due to potentially catastrophic consequences.
