Belgian Intelligence: Iran Behind Terror Attacks on Jewish Sites

Belgian intelligence has confirmed that Iran was behind two terror attacks targeting Jewish institutions in Belgium earlier this year. Gert Vercauteren, head of Belgium's Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (CUTA), stated on Thursday that the perpetrators acted with certainty on instructions from Tehran to strike Jewish targets globally.

The attacks, which occurred in March, are now understood to be part of a coordinated campaign rather than isolated vandalism. The first incident took place in Liège on the morning of March 9th, followed by another later that week where unknown assailants set fire to vehicles in the heart of Antwerp's Jewish quarter. Fortunately, no one was injured in either attack.

Israel's Ambassador to Belgium, David Saranga, reacted to the news on X, sarcastically questioning the notion of Iran directing terror attacks against Jewish sites in Belgium and suggesting European policy towards Iran should reflect the threat it poses. The Belgian National Security Council currently assesses the threat level for Israelis in Belgium as level 2, indicating an incidental threat, and advises increased caution for those in the country.
