UN Blacklists Israeli Firms Over West Bank Settlement Ties
The United Nations Human Rights Office added 61 companies, the majority of them Israeli, to a "black list" of businesses allegedly involved in human rights violations against Palestinians through commercial ties with illegal settlements in the West Bank. The list, updated on Saturday, now includes 214 businesses in total, with five previously listed companies removed for no longer being involved in such activities.
Among the newly added Israeli companies are major corporations like food producer Tivon and the Barkan winery, alongside Africa Israel, Hagihon water company, and Teperberg Winery. The UN report calls on these companies to uphold international human rights standards and address any negative impacts stemming from their activities.
The blacklist, first established in 2020 by a UN Human Rights Council vote, aims to "expose and shame" businesses connected to settlements. The council, however, lacks the authority to enforce compliance.
Israel has vehemently rejected the report and the list's publication. The Israeli diplomatic mission in Geneva stated that the database was created to target businesses that have committed no wrongdoing and called it a "corrupt political mechanism" born from a flawed council with an automatic anti-Israel majority. The Foreign Ministry further described the list as solely intended to harm Israel, with no parallel elsewhere in the world.
