UN Rights Office Adds 61 Firms to Israeli Settlement Business List
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Friday added 61 new companies to its database of businesses operating in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, which the international body deems illegal. This database is highly sensitive, as companies listed may face boycott or divestment campaigns aimed at pressuring Israel over its settlement expansion.
The database, first released in 2020, now includes 214 companies, the majority of which are Israeli, along with firms from ten other countries including France, Germany, China, and the United States. The Israeli diplomatic mission stated that the database is a "distorted mechanism" created by an entity with "severe bias" against Israel, accusing it of being designed to "persecute" the Jewish state.
Attacks by settlers on Palestinians have escalated with the spread of settlement outposts, prompting import bans on settlement goods by Britain, France, and Canada this month. The UN Human Rights Office classified companies involved in sectors such as energy, food, hospitality, transportation, and agriculture, based on confidential testimonies.
