UN Updates List of 214 Companies Linked to West Bank Settlements
The United Nations released an updated list on Friday naming 214 companies it considers linked to Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, with the majority being non-Israeli. The UN views Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law. Several prominent companies, including Airbnb, Booking, Expedia, Motorola, and Trip Advisor, remain on the list compiled by the UN Human Rights Office, which Israel opposes.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk stated in a release that the report "reminds companies of their human rights responsibilities" and their obligation to ensure they are not involved in human rights abuses or violations. While most listed companies have offices in Israel, others are headquartered in the United States, European countries, Mexico, South Africa, and China.
The list was initially published in 2020, following a 2016 decision by the UN Human Rights Council.
