Ben Gurion Airport Chaos: Arkia Flight Delays Leave Passengers Stranded

Passengers on an Arkia flight to Albania experienced extensive delays at Ben Gurion Airport, leading to significant overcrowding and logistical problems. The flight, scheduled to depart for Tirana at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, was initially pushed back to 7:00 PM, and then further delayed to 11:00 PM. Journalist Linoi Bar-Geffen, who was on the flight, reported being at the airport for approximately eight hours. She described Terminal 1 as packed, with some passengers lying on the floor and others waiting in long queues. A major issue arose for passengers who decided to forgo the trip and leave the airport, as they faced difficulties retrieving their checked luggage. Bar-Geffen stated that no Arkia representative was available to assist with baggage retrieval, and there was no information on when one would arrive. Passengers wishing to cancel their flights had to proceed from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 to formally declare their decision and get authorization to leave, followed by a wait for their luggage. Amidst the chaos, Bar-Geffen posted a warning on social media urging people to avoid the airport, which gained widespread traction. Passengers were given food vouchers during the wait, but this created another long queue, according to Bar-Geffen. She also noted that a voucher received around 5:00 PM was only valid until 7:00 PM. Different explanations for the delays were given to passengers, with some being told the airport was overloaded and others hearing about potential technical issues with the aircraft. Arkia attributed the delay to its previous flight departing late and a delayed takeoff clearance for the subsequent flight. The airline claimed passengers were kept informed and provided with food vouchers, and it apologized for the extended wait and inconvenience.
