German Referee Harm Osmers to Officiate Politically Charged Israel-Ireland Match

German referee Harm Osmers, 41, will officiate the upcoming Nations League match between Israel and Ireland, scheduled to be held in Hungary. Osmers, a Bundesliga referee since 2016 and active in European competitions since approximately 2020, has a history of controversial decisions that have drawn criticism from players and media.

Osmers has only officiated an Israeli team once before, in September 2023, when Maccabi Haifa lost 3-0 to French club Rennes. In that match, he issued six yellow cards, five of which were to Maccabi Haifa players. He has never previously refereed the Israeli national team.

Last season, Osmers faced significant backlash for his officiating during a match between Bayern Munich and Hamburg, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Bavarian media criticized his performance, stating he "matched his name ('Harm' in English - to injure) with a bad display of refereeing." The report detailed how he penalized minor fouls against Hamburg players while ignoring "gross offenses" against Bayern players.

Bayern Munich players expressed anger over what they called "bizarre decisions." Josip Stanišić described Osmers's performance as "catastrophic," while Harry Kane suggested the referee "does not have the necessary ability for a top-level referee."
