Ireland Coach's Controversial Remarks Ahead of Israel Matches

Icelandic coach Heimir Hallgrímsson of the Irish national football team has made controversial statements ahead of upcoming matches against Israel in the Nations League. Hallgrímsson stated, "We are not playing with genocide, we are playing against genocide. We are playing against Israel, not with Israel." He expressed hope for good football despite the political climate, acknowledging that there would be significant "noise" surrounding the games.

Hallgrímsson admitted to falling into "traps" and saying things he perhaps shouldn't have, attributing it to trying to be honest and facing unexpected question angles. He noted that no UEFA course prepares a coach for such situations and questioned why Russia was suspended from competition while Israel was not, stating, "I still haven't received any explanation as to why one country is suspended (Russia) and the other is not (Israel)."

The Irish team is scheduled to play Israel twice in the upcoming international window as part of their Nations League campaign. Hallgrímsson emphasized his role is to focus on football matters and protect his players, helping them concentrate on the game.
