German Referee Harm Osmers to Officiate Politically Charged Israel-Ireland Match

The Israeli national football team will host Ireland in Hungary for a politically charged Nations League match, following a 3-1 loss to Austria. The upcoming game will be officiated by German referee Harm Osmers, a Bundesliga official since 2016 and European competition referee since approximately 2020. The 41-year-old has managed significant matches both domestically and internationally.

Osmers has only officiated an Israeli club once before, in September 2023, when Maccabi Haifa lost 3-0 to French side Rennes. In that match, he issued six yellow cards, five of which were to Maccabi Haifa players. He has never previously officiated a match involving the Israeli national team.

Osmers faced considerable criticism for his officiating in a match last season between Bayern Munich and Hamburg, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Bavarian media described his performance as "harmful," noting that he penalized minor fouls against Hamburg players while ignoring rough play by Hamburg against Bayern. Bayern players expressed anger over what they called "bizarre decisions," with player Josip Stanišić labeling Osmers's performance "catastrophic." Harry Kane commented that Osmers lacked the necessary ability for a top-level referee.
