Irish Footballer Finn Azaz Navigates Complex Identity Amidst Israeli Roots

Finn Azaz, a prominent player for the Republic of Ireland and Southampton, finds himself in a challenging personal situation due to his Israeli and Jewish heritage. Azaz, born in London, is the grandson of the late Nehemia Azaz, an Israeli sculptor who fought in World War II and the Israeli War of Independence. Nehemia Azaz, who was born in Berlin, immigrated to Israel as an infant and later established the artistic ceramics department at the "Harsa" factory in Be'er Sheva in 1955. He spent most of his adult life in England before passing away in 2008.

Azaz's maternal grandmother is Yaffa Azaz, and his mother is Orit. Despite having no personal issues with Israel, the current political climate in the country he represents reportedly places him in a difficult position. He is also known to be good friends with fellow Southampton player Daniel Peretz.

Azaz began his youth career at West Bromwich Albion before moving to Aston Villa in 2021. After a successful loan spell at Plymouth Argyle, he was signed by Middlesbrough in January 2024, where he became a key player, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists in 67 league appearances. His performances earned him a call-up to the Irish national team.

In August 2025, Azaz transferred to Southampton on a four-year contract for an estimated £15 million (approximately €17.4 million). This move represented a significant increase in his market value, as Middlesbrough had acquired him for around €2.9 million just seven months prior.
