Irish Footballer Finn Azaz May Quit National Team Over Israel Matches

The Irish Football Association is reportedly concerned that Finn Azaz, a key player for the national team, might retire from international football following recent controversies surrounding matches against Israel. Azaz, 26, has a direct family connection to Israel through his mother, whose father was the Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz. This familial link has intensified discussions within the Irish squad, particularly after Gavin Bazunu opted out of playing against Israel.

Azaz, born in London, previously represented Ireland internationally despite being eligible to play for Israel. He has stated in the past that his choice was always clear, aiming to play for Ireland. He joined Southampton in August 2025 on a four-year contract, reportedly for around £15 million, and has become a vital player for the club, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists in 67 league appearances.

At Southampton, Azaz shares a locker room with Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz, and the two are considered close. This relationship, combined with his family background, makes the current situation particularly sensitive for him. As of now, Azaz has not publicly stated any intention to retire from the national team. However, if he were to do so, it would mark a significant development, given his past commitment to Ireland and his potential to represent Israel.
