Irish Football Star Finn Azaz May Quit National Team Amid Israel Controversy

Concerns are mounting within the Irish Football Association that star midfielder Finn Azaz, 26, might retire from international football following the current national team window. Irish media reports suggest the ongoing controversy surrounding the team's matches against Israel could significantly impact Azaz, who has direct family ties to Israel. His mother is from an Israeli family, and his maternal grandfather was the late Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz, a veteran of World War II's Jewish Brigade and Israel's War of Independence.

The situation is particularly sensitive for Azaz, who was born in London and grew up in youth academies before joining Aston Villa and later Middlesbrough. He has since become a key player for Middlesbrough and earned a move to Southampton in August 2025. He also shares a locker room with Israeli goalkeeper Daniel Peretz at Southampton, and the two are reportedly close.

Azaz, who could have represented Israel due to his family connections but chose Ireland, previously stated his commitment, saying, "It was always Ireland. I always had a goal to play for Ireland."
