Irish Footballer Finn Azaz Navigates Complex Identity Amidst Israeli Roots

Finn Azaz, a prominent player for Southampton and the Republic of Ireland national team, finds himself in a challenging personal situation due to his Israeli and Jewish heritage. Azaz's maternal grandfather was the late Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz, a notable figure who fought in the Jewish Brigade during World War II and the Israel Defense Forces in the War of Independence. Nehemia Azaz, born in Berlin, immigrated to Israel as an infant and later established the artistic ceramics department at the "Harsa" factory in Be'er Sheva in 1955. He spent most of his adult life in England, passing away in 2008.

Azaz's grandmother is Yaffa Azaz, and his mother is Orit. Despite having no apparent personal issues with Israel, the current political climate in the country he represents reportedly places him in a difficult position. Azaz, who was born in London, developed his football career through youth academies at West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa before making a significant impact at Plymouth Argyle. He joined Middlesbrough in January 2024, where he became a key player, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists in 67 league games, which led to his call-up to the Irish national team.

In August 2025, Azaz transferred to Southampton on a four-year contract, with reports suggesting a fee of approximately £15 million (around €17.4 million). This move represented a substantial increase in his market value, following his transfer from Aston Villa to Middlesbrough for about €2.9 million just eight months prior. Azaz is also known to be a close friend of Daniel Peretz in the Southampton dressing room.
