Irish Soccer Star Finn Azaz Faces Complex Situation Due to Israeli Heritage

Finn Azaz, a prominent player for Southampton and the Irish national football team, finds himself in a challenging personal and professional situation due to his Israeli roots. Azaz's maternal grandfather was the renowned Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz, who was born in Berlin, immigrated to Israel at four months old, fought in World War II's Jewish Brigade and Israel's War of Independence, and later established the artistic ceramics department at the historic "Harsa" factory in Be'er Sheva in 1955. Nehemia Azaz, considered a bold artist, lived most of his adult life in England after his time in Be'er Sheva and passed away in 2008.

Azaz, born in London, developed his football career through youth academies at West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa. He gained significant attention during a loan spell at Plymouth Argyle, helping them achieve promotion to the Championship. In January 2024, he moved to Middlesbrough, where he became a key player, scoring 17 goals and providing 17 assists in 67 league games, coinciding with his call-up to the Irish national team. In August 2025, he transferred to Southampton on a four-year contract for approximately £15 million (about €17.4 million), a substantial increase from the roughly €2.9 million Middlesbrough paid for him in January 2024.

While Azaz reportedly has no personal issues with Israel, the current political climate and the pressures associated with representing Ireland place him in a difficult position. He is known to be close with his Southampton teammate Daniel Peretz.
