Eran Zahavi Opens Up on Football Career, Team Conflicts, and Personal Struggles

Eran Zahavi, Israel's all-time leading goal scorer, retired from professional football last summer after concluding his contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv. In a detailed interview on Channel 13 with Omri Asenheim, Zahavi reflected on his career, personal challenges, and notable incidents involving teammates and the national team.

Zahavi shared insights into his pre-game routines, comparing them to those of current players like Daniel Peretz, whom he advised to focus on key aspects to sustain a long career. He also recounted how he played matchmaker between Peretz and Israeli pop star Noa Kirel, facilitating their relationship despite skepticism from others.

Discussing his upbringing, Zahavi revealed strained family relations, particularly with his father who left for France when Zahavi was 14. Despite attempts to reconcile, including inviting his father to his brother's wedding, the relationship remained distant. Zahavi also described how he managed debts early in his career by personally paying off creditors and instructing them not to contact his mother.

Regarding his club career, Zahavi explained his move to Maccabi Tel Aviv amid financial difficulties at Hapoel Tel Aviv and highlighted his emotional response to fan criticism during derbies. He addressed the controversial incident of removing the captain's armband for the national team, citing the hurt from boos and feeling unappreciated despite his dedication.

Zahavi also spoke about the "locker room incident," where he demanded certain conditions and clashed with teammates like Bibras Natkho and Alon Hazan over team dynamics and equality. Although he returned to the national team under pressure, he expressed regret and stated he would not return under similar circumstances today. He confirmed that his relationship with Natkho remains severed.
