Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel warning advising citizens to avoid all travel to the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia due to renewed armed conflict. The ministry urges Israelis currently in Tigray to minimize non-essential movement, stay away from gatherings, demonstrations, military installations, and friction points, and remain in secure locations.
Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to and from three airports in the region: Mekelle, Axum, and Shire. The airline has not provided a timeline for the resumption of these services. The ministry also cautioned against inter-city travel or attempting to leave the region independently due to potential road blockages, communication disruptions, and changes in exit routes, advising travelers to ensure routes and destinations are safe before proceeding.
Israelis in Tigray are requested to update the Israeli Embassy in Addis Ababa with their location and contact details, and to inform the embassy of any changes. The ministry also advises affected travelers to maintain contact with Ethiopian Airlines for updates on their flights. In case of emergency, Israelis can contact the embassy in Addis Ababa or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' situation center.
