Israel issues rare travel warning for Venezuela amid violence and earthquakes

Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Friday urged Israelis to avoid all travel to Venezuela until further notice, citing a very high risk level in the country. The ministry said the danger stems from violent crime, kidnappings, and an ongoing security and political instability.

The warning came as Venezuela was hit on Thursday by two powerful earthquakes that caused extensive damage, many casualties, and major disruption to essential infrastructure. Transportation and communications were widely affected, and authorities declared a state of emergency.

The ministry also said its ability to provide consular assistance to Israelis who get into trouble in Venezuela is limited. Local authorities are warning that more aftershocks are possible, which could worsen the situation and cause further damage.
