Israel Braces for Weather Shifts Amid Super El Niño Forecast

Israeli meteorologists are preparing for significant temperature changes and increased rainfall, potentially influenced by a developing "Super El Niño" phenomenon. While Friday is expected to see variable cloudiness with a chance of light precipitation along the southern coast, temperatures will largely remain within seasonal norms. However, Saturday will bring a noticeable drop, with further cooling anticipated.

During the intermediate days of the Sukkot holiday (Chol HaMoed), the Israeli Meteorological Service predicts a shift in weather patterns, with potential rainfall across various regions of the country. Current temperature forecasts for Friday include Jerusalem at 26°C, Tel Aviv at 29°C, and Eilat at 35°C.

Looking ahead, analyses of major global weather models from the US, Europe, and Canada suggest that the 2026-2027 winter could be unusually active with heavy precipitation. The anticipated El Niño event is expected to alter atmospheric currents, intensifying storm activity in the Middle East and potentially leading to wetter-than-average conditions in October, November, and December.

In preparation for the upcoming storm season, the Israeli Meteorological Service has released a list of 25 designated names for storms and extreme weather systems that may affect the region. Eight of these names are specifically for Israeli weather systems, with the first, "Bar," assigned to the second system of the season, expected possibly before the end of 2026. Other designated Israeli storm names include "Eitan" (system number 5) and "Hadar" (system number 8).
