Maccabi Tel Aviv Opens EuroLeague Season with Disappointing Loss to Villeurbanne

Maccabi Tel Aviv began their EuroLeague campaign with a disappointing 84-74 defeat against ASVEL Villeurbanne on Thursday. The team struggled offensively and defensively, committing numerous turnovers that led to easy points for the French side. Coach Oded Katash acknowledged the team's struggles, stating, "We weren't spaced enough in the right places, offensively we were very confused." He added that adjustments were made in the second half, but the team lacked composure.

Several new signings had mixed debuts. Jalen Reynolds was a standout with 15 points and 6 assists, while Roman Sorkin contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds. Yam Madar also had a solid EuroLeague debut with 13 points and 8 assists, though he also committed 4 turnovers. Jimmy Butler showed flashes of his potential after returning from injury, scoring 9 points and dishing out 6 assists in limited minutes before foul trouble sidelined him. Oshae Brissett added 8 points and 7 rebounds, but more was expected. Newcomers Daniel Theis and Keiton Wallace struggled, with Theis looking rusty and Wallace limited to 2 points due to foul trouble.

Bonzie Colson played less than 9 minutes due to illness, and Armando Bacot did not play significant minutes. The team's overall performance was hampered by 11 turnovers in the first half and 9 in the second. Despite brief moments of strong play, particularly in the third quarter where they briefly took the lead, Maccabi couldn't maintain momentum.

"We don't have too much time. Next week we have three games. We need to learn from this quickly, keep our heads up, and be ready for the next challenge," Katash urged. The team will look to bounce back in their next game on Sunday against Elitzur Kiryat Ata in the Winner Cup quarterfinals.

In other news, Roman Sorkin has reportedly reached an agreement on a new four-year contract with Maccabi, worth approximately $1.5 million. However, finalization of the deal is pending resolution of remaining differences regarding the total sum and an exit clause.
