Maccabi Tel Aviv Opens EuroLeague Season With Disappointing Loss

Maccabi Tel Aviv began their EuroLeague campaign with a disappointing 84-74 defeat against ASVEL Villeurbanne on Thursday. The team struggled offensively, committing numerous turnovers that led to easy points for the French side. Coach Oded Katash acknowledged the team's confusion and lack of composure on offense, stating, "We weren't spaced enough in the right places, offensively we were very confused." He added that adjustments were made in the second half, but the team "weren't calm enough offensively."

Only three Maccabi players reached double-digit scoring: Jalen Reynolds with 15 points and 6 assists, Roman Sorkin with 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Yam Madar, who had a solid EuroLeague debut with 13 points and 8 assists, though he also committed 4 turnovers. Newcomer Bonzie Colson played less than nine minutes due to illness, and Armando Bacot did not play. Other new signings like Jaron Blossomgame (9 points, 6 assists) showed flashes of contribution but were hampered by foul trouble or limited minutes. Daniel Theis also struggled in his debut, looking rusty and committing 4 turnovers alongside his 9 points.

The team's next game is Sunday against Elitzur Kiryat Ata in the Winner Cup quarterfinals, where they hope to show significant improvement. "We don't have too much time. Already next week we have three games. We need to learn from this quickly, keep our heads up, and be ready for the next challenge," Katash emphasized.
