Maccabi Tel Aviv Suffers EuroLeague Opening Loss, Coach Cites Need for Player Adjustment

Maccabi Tel Aviv opened their EuroLeague season with a disappointing 84-74 loss to ASVEL Villeurbanne on Thursday. The team expressed frustration, acknowledging they "should have won" against a rival they were expected to defeat. Only three players reached double-digit scoring for Maccabi: Jalen Reynolds with 15 points and 6 rebounds, Roman Sorkin with 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Yovel Zoosman, who contributed 13 points and 8 assists in his EuroLeague debut for the club. J.J. O'Brien, returning from injury, added 9 points and 6 assists in the second half, helping to bring his team back into contention.

However, other key players underperformed. Wade Baldwin IV, expected to lead the offense, had a particularly weak performance with only 5 points in 22 minutes before fouling out. Rookie Keion Brooks Jr. also struggled in his European debut, scoring just 2 points in 12 minutes and appearing unfocused. "It was not a good game for us," stated head coach Oded Kattash after the loss. He highlighted the team's offensive confusion and lack of composure against ASVEL's aggressive and athletic play.

Kattash admitted that "several players will need to adapt to the system" and that it will take time. "We don't have much time," he added, noting the team's upcoming busy schedule. Maccabi Tel Aviv returned to Israel on Friday to prepare for a demanding week, including a Winner Cup quarterfinal match against Ironi Kiryat Ata on Sunday, followed by a double-round week in the EuroLeague against Besiktas and Panathinaikos.
