Infant Dies in Acre; Suffocation Suspected

Medical teams at the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya pronounced a two-week-old infant dead on Thursday, September 24, after the baby was found unconscious and in critical condition at a home in Acre. Authorities are investigating the possibility that the infant suffocated after sleeping in the same bed as its parents. The emergency services "Magen David Adom" (MDA) received a call at 8:37 AM reporting an unconscious infant. A medical team was dispatched to the scene, provided initial treatment, and transported the baby to the hospital in Nahariya while performing resuscitation efforts en route. Doctors later confirmed the infant's death. Dr. Omri Gurga, a volunteer physician, and paramedic Salam Harika, who responded to the scene, described the situation as "a very difficult event." They stated that upon arrival, they found the infant unconscious, without breathing or a pulse, and immediately began emergency care, including resuscitation and medication, before transporting the child to the hospital. According to 2025 data, Israel's infant mortality rate is significantly lower than the average for OECD countries.
