Veteran Israeli Broadcaster Menashe Raz Dies at 80

Menashe Raz, a prominent Israeli journalist, television presenter, and documentary filmmaker, has passed away at the age of 80 following a serious illness. Raz was a significant figure in Israeli journalism, dedicating decades to the Israel Broadcasting Authority.

Born in Gdera on August 28, 1946, Raz began his career at the military radio station Galei Tzahal, progressing from war correspondent to editor and presenter. In late 1972, he transitioned to television, joining the news program "Mabat."

Alongside his news work, Raz was deeply involved in documentary filmmaking. In 1979, he received the prestigious "Kinor David" award for a series of films about the Israeli prison system. These documentaries sparked public debate and led to the establishment of a special commission to reform prisoner conditions.

Many of Raz's works held historical and national importance. He extensively covered the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and documented a secret operation to rescue Jewish refugees from Ethiopia via Sudan. Unique footage he captured was classified by military authorities for 25 years.

After his active television career, Raz focused on creating documentaries, teaching, and public discussions about the evolution of Israeli media. His contributions to Israeli documentary filmmaking and journalism have left a lasting impact on the country's media industry.
