Israel Tax Authority Seeks Repayment of War Compensation from Northern Businesses

Israel's Tax Authority is demanding the return of approximately 238.4 million shekels in war compensation and advances paid to 3,751 businesses in northern Israel following the "Iron Swords" war. Of this amount, about 184.3 million shekels are owed by 2,991 businesses located in communities on the confrontation line.

Overall, the Tax Authority disbursed around 5.8 billion shekels in compensation to businesses in the north, including nearly 4 billion shekels to those in frontline communities whose residents were evacuated for approximately 18 months. The primary compensation scheme for evacuated border communities was the "red route," which offered full reimbursement for lost profits. Applications for this route closed in August 2026.

Businesses in the north submitted a total of 121,302 compensation claims across all routes. Out of these, 100,539 claims have been approved and closed, while 9,488 were rejected during initial review, and 2,540 were rejected after objections. Currently, 701 claims are under objection or appeal, and 2,292 claims remain unreviewed.

Despite these efforts, some businesses report that they have not yet received final compensation, even though their claims were filed as early as 2024, according to business representatives.
