Israel Tax Authority Seeks Over $65 Million Back From Northern Businesses

Israel's Tax Authority is demanding the return of approximately NIS 238.4 million (about $65 million) from 3,751 businesses in northern Israel that received compensation or advances for damages incurred during the "Swords of Iron" war. Of this amount, NIS 184.3 million is sought from 2,991 businesses located in the confrontation line communities, which were evacuated for about a year and a half. The Tax Authority has so far disbursed NIS 5.8 billion in compensation to businesses affected by the war, with nearly NIS 4 billion going to businesses in evacuated confrontation line communities.

Many business owners in the north feel they are still trapped in the economic fallout of the war, even as new conflicts arise. One tourism business owner, who was evacuated and whose business ultimately closed due to the prolonged disruption, stated he was denied most of his NIS 70,000 compensation claim after receiving NIS 56,000 in advances, and is now being asked to repay NIS 36,000 he cannot afford. The Tax Authority has processed over 100,000 claims out of 121,302 submitted across various compensation tracks, including the "Red Track" for evacuated border communities, the "Green Track" for special areas, and business continuity grants.

Despite the official processing of most claims, many business owners and their representatives report significant delays and difficulties in receiving full compensation. Some have been waiting for years, taking out loans to survive while battling the Tax Authority over amounts. Accountants and tax experts describe a lack of sufficient personnel within the Tax Authority to handle the unprecedented volume of claims, leading to lengthy bureaucratic processes and pressure on businesses to accept lower settlements. One representative noted that out of about 120 claims filed, only 40 have been closed, with many clients awaiting final decisions.

The Tax Authority responded that its compensation fund staff are working diligently with an unprecedented number of claims and could not verify specific allegations without more details about the businesses mentioned in the report. The compensation application period for the "Red Track" officially closed in August 2026, but many businesses had already filed final claims earlier.
