Balad Party Leader Considers Withdrawing Knesset Candidacy After Disqualification

Sami Abu Shehadeh, chairman of the Balad party, is reportedly considering withdrawing his candidacy for the upcoming Knesset elections following his disqualification by the Central Elections Committee. The decision comes after the committee ruled on Wednesday that Abu Shehadeh's candidacy for the 26th Knesset was invalid.

Sources indicate that Abu Shehadeh and his associates are evaluating the option of not appealing the disqualification to the High Court of Justice. This move is being considered to prevent a potentially precedent-setting legal ruling on the boundaries between political expression and support for armed struggle against Israel.

The Central Elections Committee disqualified Abu Shehadeh based on statements he published on October 8, 2023, a day after the Hamas attacks on October 7. The Attorney General had previously advised the committee that the evidence presented suggested support for armed struggle against Israel, urging them to carefully consider his disqualification.

During the committee hearing, Abu Shehadeh denied the accusations, asserting that his statements did not constitute support for armed conflict and that he has never called for violence against Israel. He now faces a significant decision: to challenge the disqualification in the High Court, risking a broad legal precedent, or to withdraw his candidacy and avoid a judicial determination on the matter. A final decision has not yet been made by the Balad party.
