Irish Prime Minister Criticizes Israeli Football Association Remarks

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has publicly condemned statements made by the Icelandic coach of the Irish national football team regarding Israel. The coach had accused Israel of committing genocide, prompting a response from the Israeli Football Association which called his remarks "ignorance and foolishness." Speaking outside the UN General Assembly in New York, Martin stated that the coach's comments were "unacceptable" and should be retracted. He also referenced remarks by the UN Secretary-General, who reportedly described the destruction and death in Gaza as unprecedented in his years of service, adding that "Israel cannot continue to deny what the whole world knows."

Israel's national team is preparing for upcoming Nations League matches, including a game against Austria on Thursday and a match against Ireland the following week. Ireland had previously considered boycotting their games against Israel. However, they ultimately decided to proceed with the matches, albeit under specific conditions. The games will be played at a neutral venue without a home crowd, due to concerns about potential sanctions from UEFA, the European football governing body, had they opted for a boycott.
