Israeli Lawmakers Back Disqualification of Arab MK Sami Abu Shehadeh

Prominent Israeli politicians, including Yair Golan, the chairman of the Meretz party, and MK Naama Lazimi of the Labor party, have announced their support for a petition to disqualify Sami Abu Shehadeh, a Member of Knesset for the Balad party. The petition, submitted by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir of the Otzma Yehudit party, is currently being debated by the Central Elections Committee.

Several other key political figures have also voiced their backing for Abu Shehadeh's disqualification. These include former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, opposition leader Yair Lapid, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Benny Gantz, leader of the National Unity party, and Gadi Eisenkot, a prominent member of Gantz's party. The move signals a significant political alignment against Abu Shehadeh, whose party has previously been criticized for its stances.

The Central Elections Committee is the body responsible for reviewing such petitions. The committee's decision on whether to disqualify Abu Shehadeh could have implications for the representation of Arab parties in the Knesset.
