A market analysis covering the first three quarters of 2026 reveals the most sought-after professions in Israel, highlighting technological shifts and labor challenges. Engineers, sales professionals, waiters, software developers, and kitchen/cleaning staff emerged as the top five most in-demand jobs. The list also included caregivers, cooks, truck and bus drivers, construction workers, and security guards in the subsequent positions.
Software developers, while highly sought after with an average of 6,755 monthly openings, face a surplus of job seekers, numbering around 8,000. This indicates a shift in demand, with employers needing developers but not necessarily with the exact same skill sets as before, according to senior career consultant Hagit Yogev. The innovation authority suggests this could signal a change in the workforce composition.
Four key drivers are shaping the job market: technological growth and change, persistent worker shortages, the impact of war and the cessation of Palestinian labor, and demographic shifts. The market is bifurcated, with high demand for engineers and developers driven by technological advancement, and significant demand for roles like builders, cooks, and drivers where local labor is scarce, leading to increased reliance on foreign workers.
The period between January and July 2026 saw an average of 220,000 job seekers per month, a 24% increase from the same period in 2025. However, a comparison of July 2026 to July 2025 showed a 10% decrease, potentially linked to the war with Iran in June 2025. Meanwhile, a Bank of Israel and Israel Export Institute study for 2026 found that 57% of Israeli workers use AI at least weekly, transforming it into a basic work skill.
AI is significantly impacting roles in marketing, sales, HR, customer service, project management, development, content, and administration, while positions like cashiers, bank tellers, and administrative assistants are expected to shrink. The most valued skills for 2026 include practical AI use, technological literacy, analytical thinking, adaptability, communication, creativity, and leadership. Job search durations vary, with tech roles averaging three months, other positions taking six to seven months, and senior management positions ranging from six to twelve months.
