Election Committee Debates Disqualifying Arab Parties and MK

The Central Elections Committee is set to hold marathon deliberations on Wednesday and Thursday regarding ten petitions to disqualify parties and candidates from running in the 26th Knesset elections. The primary focus will be on three petitions seeking to disqualify the Ra'am party and a separate petition to disqualify Sami Abushahadeh, chairman of the Balad party.

The Attorney General and State Prosecutor have submitted their positions to the committee. Regarding Ra'am and the Joint List, they concluded that the legal basis for disqualification is insufficient. They also found no grounds to disqualify MK Ofer Kassif, Balad, Otzma Yehudit, The Democrats, Religious Zionism, and Identity.

However, concerning Abushahadeh, the Attorney General and State Prosecutor stated that an article he published on October 8, 2023, constitutes "significant evidence" that warrants consideration in the disqualification request. They urged the committee members to weigh the matter carefully but did not explicitly recommend disqualification.

Abushahadeh, who was hospitalized following an injury, requested a delay in his hearing, but Committee Chairman Judge Noam Sohlberg denied the request due to the tight schedule, allowing Abushahadeh to participate via Zoom.

Meanwhile, the Yisrael Beiteinu party announced its representatives on the committee will support the disqualification of Ra'am, the Joint List, Ofer Kassif, and Abushahadeh. The committee is also expected to discuss the Likud party's petition to disqualify the Joint List and Ofer Kassif, as well as a petition against Balad.
