Israel's Election Committee Debates Disqualifying Knesset Candidates

The Central Elections Committee, chaired by Judge Noam Sohlberg, is holding two days of marathon discussions at the Knesset auditorium regarding requests to disqualify candidates and lists from running in the upcoming 26th Knesset elections. Ten disqualification requests, filed under Basic Law: The Knesset, Section 7a, will be debated. The committee members will vote on each request at the conclusion of the proceedings.

Central to the discussions is a request to disqualify Sami Abu Shehadeh, chairman of the Balad party. The request was filed by the Otzma Yehudit party. Notably, Benny Gantz, Gadi Eisenkot, and Avigdor Lieberman have announced their support for his disqualification. The Attorney General and State Prosecutor have stated that there is a basis to believe Abu Shehadeh supports armed struggle against Israel, urging the committee to consider the disqualification request seriously.

Other disqualification requests on the agenda include three against the Ra'am party, two against Otzma Yehudit, one against the Democratic party led by Yair Golan, and one against the Religious Zionism party led by Bezalel Smotrich and the Identity party led by Moshe Feiglin. Additionally, the committee will consider requests to disqualify the Joint List and MK Ofer Cassif, as well as Balad itself, filed by the Orut HaShachar party.

The schedule for the first day includes the Likud party's request to disqualify Ofer Cassif, Otzma Yehudit's request against Abu Shehadeh, followed by discussions on Ra'am and other lists. The second day will focus on disqualification requests for Otzma Yehudit, Religious Zionism, Identity, and Golan's Democratic party. The committee chairman noted that the schedule may change based on the pace of discussions, with a possibility of further hearings if significant delays occur.
