Israeli Basketball League Launches Reforms to Boost National League

The 2026/27 season of the Winner National League, Israel's second-tier basketball league, is set to begin in approximately three weeks, marked by a festive season-opening event attended by league representatives, players, coaches, sponsors, and sports officials. This event is part of a broader reform initiative led by the Chairman of the Basketball Association, Amos Frishman. Key changes include moving league games to Fridays, establishing an external board of directors comprising business and professional figures, and introducing grants for teams based on fan attendance and digital asset management.

During the event, a "National League Honoree" award was presented to former players recognized for their contributions to the league. Among the recipients were Ilan Berkovich, who played in the 1990s and early 2000s, Elad Hoffman, who achieved promotion with Kiryat Gat and Ironi Nes Ziona and played for Elitzur Yavne, and Yoni Nir, who was promoted with Kiryat Gat and also played for Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim and Maccabi Ramat Gan.

Amos Frishman stated that the league's perception is changing, with plans to rebrand and increase its exposure, emphasizing its foundational role in Israeli basketball. He expressed confidence that the implemented changes will propel the league forward, wishing for a successful season with full arenas.

Ron Vorotitzky, Chairman of the Winner National League Directorate, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the league's critical role in developing future Israeli basketball talent. He noted that the season-opening event is another step in ongoing reforms, which have included significant support from the Toto (Sports Betting Board) and the Ministry of Culture and Sport over the past six years. Vorotitzky urged teams to actively participate in these efforts and wished everyone a successful and enjoyable season.
