Knesset Candidate's Disqualification Hearing Postponed Due to Hospitalization
A hearing to consider the disqualification of Knesset candidate Sami Abu Shehadeh has been postponed after he was admitted to the hospital. Abu Shehadeh's legal team sought the delay, requesting a new date be set in light of his health condition. The "Otzma Yehudit" party, led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, has stated it will push to proceed with the hearing even if Abu Shehadeh remains hospitalized, accusing him of attempting to evade the proceedings. Abu Shehadeh has not yet responded to these claims.
"Otzma Yehudit" filed a request with the Central Elections Committee on September 16 to disqualify Abu Shehadeh from the Knesset elections, citing his past statements and positions as grounds for disqualification under the Basic Law: The Knesset. Abu Shehadeh, represented by the Adalah legal center, has rejected the disqualification request, with Adalah arguing that such requests against Arab candidates and lists do not meet the necessary legal standards.
The Central Elections Committee was scheduled to discuss Abu Shehadeh's disqualification request, along with others, on September 23. Following the committee's decision, the requests will be forwarded to the relevant judicial bodies for further review.
