Judge Rejects Plea to Postpone Hearing for Arab Israeli Lawmaker
The Chairman of the Central Elections Committee, Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg, rejected a request by Arab Israeli lawmaker Sami Abu Shehadeh to postpone a hearing concerning him. Abu Shehadeh, who is hospitalized at Rambam Hospital following an injury, had asked to delay the hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, September 23, until Thursday morning. He cited his admission to the trauma ward and an expected release only on Thursday afternoon. Alternatively, he requested to participate in the hearing via video conference.
Justice Sohlberg ruled that the hearing would proceed as scheduled, but Abu Shehadeh would be permitted to join remotely via Zoom. The judge explained that the decision was due to the tight schedule and the need to submit the concluding document for the legal committee's work. This committee is examining "special reasons" under Section 5 of the Knesset Law, which could potentially disqualify candidates.
The request was filed as part of proceedings initiated by the Otzma Yehudit party against Abu Shehadeh. The legal committee is expected to submit its final report to the government soon.
