New Ultra-Orthodox Food Chain Acquires 11 Supermarkets for $9.5 Million

Daniel Veridiger, founder of the new ultra-Orthodox food chain "100 and Beyond," is acquiring 11 "City Market" branches for approximately NIS 35 million (about $9.5 million), including inventory. This significant expansion will immediately add tens of thousands of new customers across Israel.

The acquired stores are located in Beer Yaakov, Ramla, Kfar Saba, Be'er Sheva, Kiryat Ono, Rehovot, Hadera, Or Yehuda, Tel Aviv-Yafo, and Gedera. Veridiger, formerly CEO of Shufersal's "Yesh Chesed" chain, established "100 and Beyond" earlier this year with a focus on discounted food purchases across multiple formats: discount stores, neighborhood shops, and online.

This acquisition primarily bolsters the neighborhood store format. Veridiger is also in advanced negotiations to open additional discount stores in the southern region and Jerusalem, with a large branch planned for the capital. "100 and Beyond" currently operates one discount store in Ashdod.

A notable aspect of the deal is that all 11 acquired branches will close on Saturdays, aligning with Veridiger's chain's operational model, even though "City Market" itself typically keeps about 70% of its branches open on Saturdays. The specific branches being sold have historically closed on the Sabbath.

For "City Market," the sale coincides with its own expansion plans, having opened eight new branches in the past year and anticipating around 15 more by 2027. The completion of the acquisition by "100 and Beyond" is pending approval from the Antitrust Commissioner.
