Maccabi Tel Aviv Explores Hosting EuroLeague Games in Cyprus

Maccabi Tel Aviv is reportedly exploring the possibility of hosting its EuroLeague basketball home games in Cyprus due to the ongoing security situation in Israel. According to Greek media reports, the team has approached the Cypriot government about using venues on the island. This move comes as Maccabi is expected to begin its European season in Serbia for the fourth consecutive year.

Cyprus offers a closer alternative to Serbia, potentially allowing for more frequent attendance by Israeli fans. Reports suggest that two suitable arenas have been identified. The team's recent participation in a preparation tournament in Cyprus, where they played against Aris Thessaloniki and Olympiacos, has reportedly strengthened ties with Cypriot basketball. It is also claimed that Maccabi chairman Shimon Mizrahi met with the President of Cyprus.

If the move to Cyprus materializes, Maccabi Tel Aviv would likely play at the 8,000-seat Spyros Kyprianou Arena, which hosted games during the recent European Championship. Meanwhile, EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu is scheduled to visit Israel, along with another senior league official, in what could be a step towards bringing games back to Israel. Maccabi's upcoming home schedule includes games against Besiktas, Milan, Real Madrid, Paris, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Olympiacos, Dubai, Virtus Bologna, Zalgiris Kaunas, and Anadolu Efes.
