Maccabi Tel Aviv is reportedly close to finalizing an agreement to host its EuroLeague basketball games in Cyprus. According to a report by CyprusBasket, negotiations accelerated during a recent preparatory tournament in Cyprus attended by the team.
During the tournament, Maccabi Tel Aviv's chairman, Shimon Mizrahi, met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. The report indicates that Mizrahi expressed the Israeli club's serious interest in using Cyprus as its home venue for EuroLeague matches. Following this, Maccabi Tel Aviv officially submitted a letter to the Cypriot president, formally declaring its intention to hold its games in the top European competition in Cyprus.
The Cypriot side has reportedly received the request favorably, making it highly probable, almost certain, that Maccabi Tel Aviv will play its home EuroLeague games in Cyprus. The specific venue is still undecided, with two potential arenas being considered: the "Spyros Kyprianou" in Limassol and the "Tassos Papadopoulos - Eleftheria" in Nicosia.
Since the outbreak of the war on October 7, Maccabi Tel Aviv has been hosting its EuroLeague games in Belgrade, Serbia. If the move to Cyprus is confirmed, it would be a welcome development for the team's fans, allowing for shorter travel to support their team.
