Israel on Alert as Saudi-Houthi Conflict Threatens Regional Escalation

Israel's military is heightening its alert levels and intensifying consultations amid escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi rebels, raising concerns of a wider regional conflagration that could draw Israel into the fray. Security officials are not ruling out a scenario where an expanded conflict could lead to an Iranian response impacting the Saudi-Houthi confrontation, potentially drawing in the United States. The heightened alert affects the Air Force and air defense systems, with early warning models being refined and information shared with the political leadership. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's shortened visit to the United States also adds to the regional tension.

The recent escalation began with Houthi launches of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting Saudi Arabia, including alleged strikes on sensitive sites in Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities. Saudi Arabia reported intercepting missiles aimed at Riyadh and thwarting other attempts, though reports indicated a fire at an Aramco fuel depot near the international airport. In response, the Saudi military launched significant airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

The Houthis have also advanced along the Red Sea coast, threatening shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Behind the scenes, the U.S. has engaged with the Houthis, who reportedly conveyed they would not target U.S. interests if Washington did not intervene directly. The U.S. is currently not engaging offensively.

Israel, through U.S. mediation, has provided intelligence on the Houthis to Saudi Arabia, according to reports. While a dialogue on drone and missile early warning assistance has occurred, it has not progressed significantly. Israeli security sources consider the situation highly sensitive, noting that the Houthis act as an Iranian proxy. They fear that increased Saudi pressure on the Houthis could lead them to attack Israel, potentially triggering a wider conflict involving Iran and possibly the U.S.

Israel is currently not directly involved in the conflict, receiving updates via U.S. CENTCOM as Saudi Arabia prepares for retaliatory strikes. However, Israeli intelligence agencies, Aman and the Mossad, are closely monitoring developments with concern.
