US Warns of Escalating Yemen Conflict's Regional Impact

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem has issued an emergency warning to American citizens in Israel, citing a sharp escalation in hostilities between Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The advisory urges Americans to "exercise increased vigilance" and prepare for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions, as the military conflict "could escalate quickly."

The warning follows a Houthi claim of striking "sensitive targets" in Riyadh. Saudi authorities confirmed intercepting and destroying a ballistic missile aimed at the capital. Reports also indicated a large fire and thick smoke near King Khalid International Airport, though the cause remains officially undetermined. The embassy recalled previous Houthi attacks on civilian airports.

U.S. diplomatic missions in Israel, including embassies in Jerusalem and consulates in Tel Aviv and Haifa, are operating normally. This specific warning, however, is notable as it's the first issued by the U.S. Embassy in Israel solely concerning the Houthi-Saudi conflict, distinct from previous alerts related to Iran.

Similar warnings were released by U.S. diplomatic missions across Jordan, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Lebanon. The Houthis, who control populated areas of Yemen, have intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia in recent months, targeting cities, energy infrastructure, and shipping lanes, thereby increasing risks to oil supplies and Red Sea maritime routes.

The UN Security Council has condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi civilian and energy infrastructure, labeling them a military escalation. For Israel, the developing situation signifies another potential zone of instability in the region. The U.S. warning suggests Washington views the conflict's progression as capable of rapidly affecting air travel and security throughout the Middle East, beyond the immediate combatants.
