Man Alleges Homophobic Attack, Hotel Mishandling in Jerusalem

A musician from Tel Aviv claims he was subjected to a severe homophobic attack and subsequent physical assault at a prominent hotel in Jerusalem. David Lerner, 28, who was staying at the hotel with his mother, recounted that a man approached him in a smoking area and threatened his life if he returned to the pool area wearing swim trunks, stating he would not leave the hotel alive. Lerner reported the threat to hotel management, who he alleges then escorted him back to the pool area to identify the aggressor, directly confronting the man who had threatened him.

According to Lerner, the situation escalated rapidly upon his return to the pool area. He reported being subjected to severe homophobic slurs by the aggressor and his family. When Lerner began filming the verbal abuse, the aggressor's partner allegedly knocked his phone away. Shortly thereafter, the aggressor reportedly pushed past security guards, shoved Lerner forcefully, and punched him twice in the forehead. Lerner sought medical attention at a hospital and filed a police complaint, reporting he is suffering from severe headaches, sleep disturbances, and trauma.

Lerner decided to publicize the incident to raise awareness about violence against the LGBTQ+ community in Israel. His attorney, Assaf Sharaff, stated that the hotel failed to protect his client, instead leading him directly to the person who had threatened him, thereby exposing him to danger. The attorney emphasized that hotels have a responsibility to ensure guest safety, especially after receiving a threat report, and that they are examining the hotel's liability in the matter.

The hotel management issued a statement condemning violence and confirming that the police were called and the incident was handled with the utmost seriousness. The police have not yet issued a response.
